Hot Melt Adhesive & PUR

Keep Your Glue System Running at Its Best

From standard EVA hot melt to high-performance PUR adhesive, we help you get the most from your edgebander's glue system — with expert advice, servicing, and support.

The Right Adhesive Makes All the Difference

The quality of your edgebanding is only as good as your adhesive system. Whether you're running standard EVA hot melt or upgrading to PUR for a stronger, more durable bond, getting the setup right is critical to achieving a clean, consistent finish.

At ILEX Machinery, we have over 32 years of experience working with edgebanding machines and their glue systems. We can advise on the right adhesive for your application, help you maintain your glue pot, and carry out servicing to keep everything running cleanly.

EVA Hot Melt vs PUR — Which Is Right for You?

EVA Hot Melt

Standard

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is the most widely used hot melt adhesive for edgebanding. It melts quickly, bonds reliably, and is straightforward to work with. EVA is well suited to most furniture and joinery applications where panels are not exposed to high temperatures or moisture.

Advantages

  • Fast melt and application
  • Cost-effective and widely available
  • Easy to clean from the glue pot
  • Suitable for most standard panel materials

Considerations

  • Lower heat resistance than PUR
  • Can soften in high-temperature environments
  • Not ideal for exterior or high-moisture applications

PUR Adhesive

High Performance

Polyurethane reactive (PUR) adhesive forms a chemical bond that cures through moisture in the air, creating an extremely strong, flexible joint. PUR is the preferred choice for demanding applications — kitchen worktops, bathroom furniture, exterior joinery, and anywhere panels are exposed to heat, moisture, or stress.

Advantages

  • Exceptional bond strength
  • High heat and moisture resistance
  • Ideal for demanding environments
  • Thinner glue line for a cleaner finish

Considerations

  • Higher material cost than EVA
  • Requires a dedicated PUR glue pot
  • More involved cleaning procedure

How We Can Help

Glue Pot Servicing & Cleaning

Burnt or carbonised adhesive in the glue pot causes poor bonding and inconsistent application. We carry out thorough cleaning and servicing to restore your system to full performance.

Temperature Calibration

Incorrect glue temperature is one of the most common causes of edgebanding failure. We check and calibrate your machine's temperature settings to match your adhesive and edge material.

PUR System Conversion

Thinking of switching from EVA to PUR? We can advise on compatibility with your existing machine and carry out the conversion, including fitting a dedicated PUR glue pot where required.

Adhesive Application Advice

Getting the right glue spread, temperature, and feed speed for your specific edge material and panel substrate takes experience. We'll help you dial in the settings for a perfect result.

Fault Diagnosis

Edge lifting, poor adhesion, glue stringing, or uneven application? We diagnose and resolve adhesive system faults quickly, whether on-site or by phone.

On-Site Support

Our engineers can visit your premises to carry out glue system servicing, calibration, and training — minimising disruption to your production schedule.

Common Glue System Problems & How to Avoid Them

Edge lifting or poor adhesion

Likely cause: Glue temperature too low, insufficient spread, or contaminated panel surface.

Fix: Check temperature settings against adhesive manufacturer's specification. Ensure panels are clean and at room temperature before edgebanding.

Glue stringing or oozing

Likely cause: Temperature too high, or adhesive left in the pot for too long.

Fix: Reduce temperature slightly and ensure the glue pot is emptied and cleaned regularly. Avoid leaving adhesive in the pot overnight where possible.

Burnt or discoloured adhesive

Likely cause: Overheating or infrequent cleaning of the glue pot.

Fix: Clean the glue pot thoroughly and replace with fresh adhesive. Consider reducing standby temperature during breaks.

Inconsistent glue line thickness

Likely cause: Worn or partially blocked glue application roller.

Fix: Inspect and clean the application roller. Replace if worn. Check that the roller gap is set correctly for your edge thickness.
